Getting from Band 5.5 to Band 7.0 in 8 weeks is achievable — but only with a structured, strategic plan. Generic "practice everyday" advice doesn't work. Here's the exact plan Canbridge uses with students.
Why Most IELTS Prep Fails
Most students prepare by doing random practice tests and reading general English tips. This doesn't work because IELTS is a skill test with specific marking criteria, not an English proficiency exam. You need to know exactly what examiners reward.
Week-by-Week Study Plan
Week 1–2: Diagnostic + Foundation
- Take a full mock test to identify your weakest section
- Study the band descriptors for each section — know what Band 7 Writing looks like vs Band 6
- Listening: Focus on spelling (singular/plural, capital letters) — this is where most marks are lost
- Reading: Practice skimming + scanning. Don't read every word. Time yourself strictly (20 min per passage)
Week 3–4: Intensive Section Work
- Writing Task 1: Learn the 4-paragraph structure. Never describe every data point — identify the key trend and two notable features
- Writing Task 2: Master 3 essay types (opinion, discussion, problem-solution). Use consistent 5-paragraph structure
- Speaking: Record yourself. Count filler words. Aim for 0 "umm" and "like" per response
Week 5–6: Practice Under Exam Conditions
- Do 3 full mock tests per week — all 4 sections in one sitting, strictly timed
- Score each test using the official IELTS marking criteria (not just answer keys)
- For Writing, get your essays reviewed by an experienced IELTS teacher — self-assessment is unreliable
Week 7: Weak Points Only
- Identify the 2–3 question types you consistently drop marks on
- Do focused drills on only those types — not general practice
- Vocabulary: Learn 5 academic collocations per day. Avoid repeating the same words in Writing
Week 8: Test Conditions + Mental Preparation
- Do 1 mock test on the same day of the week as your actual test
- Sleep 8 hours the night before — cognitive performance drops 20% on 6 hours
- Eat a proper breakfast. Bring water. Arrive 30 minutes early
The Single Biggest Hack for Each Section
- Listening: Follow the audio with your pencil on the answer sheet. Never let your mind wander
- Reading: Always read the questions first, then the passage. Never the other way round
- Writing: Spend 5 minutes planning before writing anything. Students who plan score higher
- Speaking: Ask for clarification freely — it shows confidence and doesn't cost marks
