Getting a Canada student permit as an Indian applicant in 2025 involves more than just getting admission. This guide covers every requirement, common pitfalls, and exactly what IRCC officers look for.

What is a Canadian Study Permit?

A study permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). It is not a visa — most Indian applicants need both a study permit and a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

Core Requirements in 2025

1. Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

You must have an unconditional letter of acceptance from a DLI before applying. The letter must include your program name, start date, duration, and tuition fees.

2. IELTS Score

Most Canadian universities require a minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5. Competitive programs and universities like UofT, UBC, and McGill require 6.5–7.0. The SDS (Student Direct Stream) program requires 6.0 upfront to speed up processing.

3. Proof of Funds

For 2025, you must demonstrate:

  • Tuition fees for your first year
  • At least CAD 10,000 (approximately ₹6.2 Lakhs) for living expenses
  • Return transportation funds

Education loans, personal savings, and family sponsor funds are all acceptable. Bank statements must cover the last 4–6 months.

4. Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Your SOP must answer three questions the visa officer will ask: Why this program? Why Canada? Why will you return to India after your studies? A weak SOP is the single biggest cause of avoidable refusals.

5. Proof of Ties to India

IRCC must be convinced you will return after your studies. Strong ties include: property ownership, family members in India, a job offer in your field, or parents with businesses. This section is often underestimated by applicants.

SDS vs Regular Stream — Which is Faster?

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) processes applications in approximately 20 working days (vs 8–12 weeks for regular). To qualify:

  • IELTS 6.0+ upfront (not just university requirement)
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 10,000 from a participating bank
  • Full tuition payment for the first year
  • Medical exam completed before applying

For most Indian applicants who can meet these requirements, SDS is strongly recommended.

Common Refusal Reasons

  • Weak SOP — vague reasons for choosing Canada or the program
  • Insufficient funds documentation — recent large deposits (red flag), inconsistent statements
  • Poor study plan — the program doesn't align with your academic background
  • No ties to India — nothing proving you intend to return
  • Previous visa refusals not declared — always disclose, never hide

Processing Time in 2025

Current processing times (April 2025):

  • SDS: 20 working days (~4 weeks)
  • Regular: 8–12 weeks
  • With additional document requests: add 2–4 weeks

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Get admission to a DLI and receive your unconditional offer letter
  2. Take IELTS (or PTE) and meet the university's requirement
  3. Open a GIC account (if using SDS) — TD, Scotiabank, or CIBC
  4. Pay first-year tuition (if using SDS)
  5. Complete medical examination at a panel physician
  6. Create an IRCC account and submit online application
  7. Pay application fee (CAD 150) and biometrics fee (CAD 85)
  8. Attend biometrics appointment at VFS Global
  9. Wait for decision — track via IRCC account
